GM Performance Parts Releases the Supercharged 638HP LS9 Crate Engine

GM's LS9 6.2L supercharged V8 makes the 2009 Corvette ZR1 the fastest production GM car ever. GM Performance Parts has announced that the 638 horsepower engine will be available as a complete crate engine package.

The LS9 crate engine is ideal for enthusiasts that want to add even more power to their vintage Corvettes and project cars. The crate engine comes with the ignition system, supercharger assembly, exhaust manifolds, etc. Those that are interested in the crate engine will need to also get an external oil tank, external coolant tank (for the charge cooler) and an ECU/wire harness.

General Motors has just released a huge gallery of photos of its new Chinese-only Regal sedan. Anyone who has seen the Opel Insignia will immediately recognize the Regal as a badge engineered version of Opel's mid-size model. Aside from the standard Buick waterfall grille and the badges, the new Regal is essentially the Insignia. Prior to the launch of that car last summer, we had been expecting that car to arrive stateside in the next year or two as the next-generation Saturn Aura. However, GM delayed that program earlier this year and it may in fact be dead.

When GM revealed its viability plan to congress earlier this month, Buick, along with Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac were announced as the core U.S. brands, with Saturn on the backburner. GM has not provided any indication of whether it will offer the Regal in the US market as a Buick, but the Epsilon II platform it uses will also sit under the new LaCrosse and the next-generation Chevrolet Malibu so it should have no trouble passing US safety regs. With Buick being a core brand and only having the LaCrosse, Lucerne and Enclave right now a fourth model might be helpful. Some suggest that it could be offered as a lower cost four-cylinder alternative to the LaCrosse, but there's no word yet on how much the Regal will cost to manufacture. We hope to learn more about Buick's plans at the Detroit show in a couple of weeks when the LaCrosse is finally unveiled.

The 2009 Hummer H3T: Well, You Can’t Knock ‘Em All Outta The Park

Despite a laundry list of innovative ideas and hybrid technologies that GM is unleashing on the market, they seem to be setting themselves up for a pretty spectacular failure with the 2009 Hummer H3T. I’ll admit that I want one though, chiefly because 1.) They’re probably selling for a song, and 2.) You just never know when you might need to drag a house down. Well, plus the fact that a vehicle with a 38.7 degree Approach Angle and a 32.0 Departure Angle really turns me on…

Inarguably a beast, the new Hummer H3T features a GVWR [Gross Vehicle Weight Rating] of 6,100 lbs, a max payload of 1,015 lbs, and a towing capacity of 5,900 lbs [insert Tim Allen’s “Tool Time” grunt here]. A 325 cu in 5.3L V8 engine and a 4-sp automatic transmission produce 300-hp, a number I found surprisingly lacking given the H3T’s overall muscle. Obviously designed for brute strength rather than speed, the Hummer H3T also comes equipped with Hill Hold Assist, a feature that essentially provides for the ability to scale the side of an office building. With a base price of $31,495, even a card-carrying Greenpeace member has to admit that the Hummer H3T boasts a surprising amount of power in such an economic package.

Although, of all the admittedly impressive features the Hummer H3T’s website lists, the EPA fuel estimate is noticeably absent from the H3T’s official webpage. We’re guessing the numbers are similar to the stats on other Hummer models, which would put fuel consumption for the 2009 Hummer H3T at around 16 mpg city/20 hwy. Unfortunately, with specs like those in today’s market, it’s going to take a little more than multi-leaf dual stage springs to carry the Hummer H3T [or any Hummer] through this rough patch.

GM Asks FAA To Bar Public Tracking Of Leased Corporate Jet, Still Asks Public For Money [Carpocalypse Now]

In yet another stunning display of GM's critical lack of understanding of the importance of transparency when asking for public assistance has asked aviation regulators to block the public's ability to track the company's leased private planes. When will this company learn a little thing called "message?"

When asked about the request to the FAA, GM spokesman Greg Martin declined to discuss the reason, only saying "we availed ourselves of the option as others do to have the aircraft removed."

The move comes after the automaker was criticized for flying CEO Rick Wagoner (pictured above demonstrating a landing maneuver) in a leased Gulfstream Aerospace G-IV jet on November 18th and 19th to testify in front of Congress for a $25 billion loan to save the American auto industry.

While the move is something they're "allowed" to do, it's monumentally stupid given their desire for a bridge loan to save the company. Congress, the media and the public (even SNL!) already would like to tar and feather the automaker and it's CEO, this is yet another reason to do it. Just a hint to the PR staff at the General — right now you need more transparency, not less of it. You certainly don't need to be making moves easily perceived by the public as hiding information, and this can very easily be perceived as such.

We're beginning to wonder whatever happened to GM's vaunted PR staff — and whether there's anyone over there who's truly in command of the automaker's message.

2009 Corvette ZR1 Hits the Nurburgring and Gives the GT-R Some Competition

SNL Sketch Takes On Not-So-Big Three Congressional Hearing [Carpocalypse Now]

Saturday Night Live took on the not-so-Big Three's congressional testimony and "jetpooling" incident in this weekend's "cold open," and unfortunately fell into the trap of shamelessly mocking tired stereotypes. Which is sad, because we'd watched SNL take on a new level of relevancy as of late thanks to the uber-adorable Tina Fey and an election season devoid of real political commentary. That's not to say watching Will Forte as Rick Wagoner, Darrell Hammond as Bob "The Builder" Nardelli and Jason Sudeikis as Alan Mulally isn't funny, but hearing about quality issues on the upcoming Ford Fiesta and a Cadillac XLR-V is a bit ol' and busted if you ask us. Now quality issues on a Chrysler 300C? That's comedic genius. But hackneyed and tired jokes aside, we were more concerned with further evidence the automakers have done the world's worst job of getting their message out.

For example, when we heard Casey Wilson as NY Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Clueless) explaining to the auto chiefs Congress mandated 200 MPG cars and in doing so they've "done their part." The joke on cluelessly ineffective CAFE over-reaching was met with absolute silence. Contrast that with a moment later when Hammond, as Nardelli, responds to the question "What is Chrysler doing to make more fuel efficient cars?" with "I don't know." The joke's greeted with massive laughter. Here's a tip for GM, Ford and Chrysler — when you become a bigger punchline than Congress, you know you've done a piss-poor job at message management. GM adds more cash to Red Tag Sale for '08 trucks/SUVs

Auto sales in the US are at a 25-year-low, and both dealers and manufacturers are dying to get showroom traffic going again. There isn't a whole lot working right now, so GM is throwing more cash on the hood of '08 models to shock some life into its Red Tag sale. Trucks and SUVs are getting the lion's share of the love, with rebates of $5,000 to $10,000 off selected 2008 models. The Equinox and Torrent sit on the low end of the rebate spectrum at five large, while the Silverado and Sierra tip the scales at up to $8,000.

If you've been waiting for the chance to own a Tahoe or Yukon, they also have $8,000 in customer cash, while the General is willing to put $9,000 on the hood of the Suburban. Not surprisingly, the large-and-in-charge Cadillac Escalade and Hummer H2 have the biggest incentives at $10,000 off MSRP. It looks like GM is in the mood to deal, so if you play your cards right, you could probably get Rick Wagoner to pick you up in the Volt mule and drop you off at the dealer.

GM Third Row Seats have become Hot items for Thieves

It has been reported out of Long Beach, California that GM’s removable third row seats in SUV’s such as the Tahoe and Yukon have become a hot commodity with thieves. The fact that the seats are unmarked and general interchangeable makes them rather appealing. It also helps that they are built to be easily removed despite their weight.

When purchasing your GM SUV the seats are a factory add-on that costs a mere $460. However, on the re-sale market the fold-down seats can run over twice that amount.

The Long Beach Police Department is offering up a solution to owners who wish to protect their investment. The Department is offering to engrave the third row seats for owners to provide some form of tracking if the seats were to be stolen. As it is now GM seats do not come with any registration or factory tracking numbers. The engravings will be placed in a number of hidden locations on the seats to help prevent thieves from removing them.

GM may not have any identification numbers on their seats now, but maybe that is something they will be looking into if the occurence of these third row seating thefts becomes an epidemic.
